Case Study - Web/Browser Enabled Database Application

PDF

"Development of a browser based database application for a major Aberdeen-based Oil and Gas support company"

Our client - a global oil and gas services company needed a web-enabled database application to manage their inventory of specialist engineering components that are deployed worldwide at locations both onshore and offshore.

Project remit was the conversion of an existing spreadsheet of engineering components to a database application that could be accessed and updated securely via company intranet or extranet using a web browser. Database included filtered search capability to facilitate information retrieval based on user-defined parameters.

We had to take an existing Lotus based application used for quote and procurement tracking across a single department and bring it inline with the new specification. We took a comprehensive brief and created a new software solution which has resolved a number of bugs in the original system, added new functionality and made data sharing across multiple departments possible.

Whereas the original spreadsheet was a local single-user system, the database has provided true multi-user capability and is available worldwide 24x7 to allow users to locate suitable components any time, anywhere, thereby improving efficiency, resource utilisation, component tracking and communication.
